The Masons returned for 3 projects inside
The first is to make the Hearth for the Fireplace
The bottom is 4 rows of bricks with Oklahoma Stand Up Flagstone used for the sitting area. After many discussions with our builder, we got our way and were able to have the top of the hearth at 14 inches high - perfect for sitting next to the fire and for a step up to the cabinets on either side. Then they placed our Arkansas Tumbled Stone Up the fireplace wall.
The next project was to brick the kitchen island.
You won't have to worry about a bar chair or leg knocking through the wall. There will be an 18 inch wide countertop placed slightly higher than the kitchen countertops for a bar area.
The 3rd and most dramatic (I think) project was to brick and stone the area above the stove
A few months ago we were able to acquire a Vent-a-hood 2 blower hood for the stove. It has really required lots of pre-planning in order to make it work. From gas lines and electric in exact places for the range and 2 8 inch ducts that merge into a 12 inch vent for the hood, lots of subs have had there hand in this stove and vent.
The masons started with a brick sides that will act as buttresses for the arch above the stove.
The masons then built a plywood arch template that will hold the brick while they set
Then they start laying the stone above. The arch is so strong, we could of went 14 feet up with no extra support (we only needed about 5 feet)
This is it completed, the hood will slip up and inside the cavity
(note: Rachel is not actually holding the arch up!)
