Happy Thanksgiving

As we approach the end of 2013, we celebrate three important holidays all very close together: Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years.  This year Rachel and I have so many things to be thankful for.  While most people enjoy Thanksgiving for the food, the football and the start of some crazy shopping, it is important to remember to thank God for all we have had, have now and the things God will bring us in the future.  For this is the true meaning of this wonderful time of year, to step back and give thanks to our Lord.  I can fill this entire page with the things we are grateful for, but I thought I would let our first President say it best:

Thanksgiving Proclamation

Issued by President George Washington, at the request of Congress, on October 3, 1789

By the President of the United States of America, a Proclamation.

Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor; and—Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me “to recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness:”

Now, therefore, I do recommend and assign Thursday, the 26th day of November next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country previous to their becoming a nation; for the signal and manifold mercies and the favor, able interpositions of His providence in the course and conclusion of the late war; for the great degree of tranquillity, union, and plenty which we have since enjoyed; for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national one now lately instituted; for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and, in general, for all the great and various favors which He has been pleased to confer upon us.

And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations, and beseech Him to pardon our national and other trangressions; to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually; to render our National Government a blessing to all the people by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed; to protect and guide all sovereigns and nations (especially such as have shown kindness to us), and to bless them with good governments, peace, and concord; to promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us; and, generally, to grant unto all mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as He alone knows to be best.

Given under my hand at the City of New York the third day of October in the year of our Lord 1789.

Painters Arrive

The Painters arrived this week to stain and finish the Knotty Alder

Next week they will start painting the walls and ceilings and the other cabinetry

We experimented with all different kinds of stains with the Knotty Alder.  I have never worked with the wood, so I was unsure of how it took the stain.  Although it is a hard wood, it reacts much like pine.  It required a 1st coat of Pre-Conditioner, followed by 2 coats of Black Cherry Stain.  Then painters spray sanding sealer over the cabinets, sand in between coats, then finally putting a finish coat of Laquer all over the the cabinets.

Cabinetry Completed

Sergio and his crew completed the cabinetry, the build-out of all the closets, all the base and crown molding and the library shelves.

End of 15th week

Finish Carpentry

The doors, trim and material for cabinets arrives.

Knotty Alder Plywood - for Kitchen, Living Room and Master & Guest Baths

Profile of Crown Molding

Profile of Base Trim

The finish carpenters start by turning our 3 car garage into their workshop and staging area.

And when that area wasn't big enough, they set up an additional table saw for plywood in the living room and kitchen area!

This is Sergio working on some cabinets

Arched Closet doors

Door cased out

Double Crown Molding - Made by flipping base molding upside down about 10 inches from ceiling, then nailing the crown to it.  Makes the crown look a lot bigger and more expensive for a fraction of the cost of choosing a very wide crown.

Base Molding 5 1/4 inch tall.  Notice how with the round corners, they have to miter around the corner with 22 1/4 degree miters.

Double Crown detail around fireplace

Cased out windows downstairs

Cased out double closet doors in Guest Bedroom.  We had the carpenters build some shelves and have 2 rods on one side and a tall single rod on the other side

Upstairs Hall Closet - Again we had Sergio and his crew build some shelves.

Window Stool Detail Upstairs (only downstairs windows were fully cased out)

Upstairs Bedroom Closet, again we had the carpenters build a custom closet system

Master Closet Shelves and Shoe racks - it does make this room a lot narrower

Master Closet Drawers and Rods

Sergio and his crew today started on Kitchen Cabinets.  They will have Knotty Alder fronts, and the only Knotty Alder Plywood on sides where you might see it.  These 3 cabinets are in a tight corner between the range and where the refridgerator will be.

This is the Laundry Room cabinets.  Not as many as in our previous home, but once you see the pantry, you won't have to worry about storage space!  As you can see, Rachel and I moving the washer hookups late one night a couple of weeks ago ended up working out great.  The box is to the right of the base cabinet and we will be able to put a sliding drawer hamper like we had in our last home in that base cabinet.
